I’m strongly considering always leaving my work alarm on on days I have off - I don’t think there is a more glorious moment than the moment of realization that you can just go back to sleep.

The Great Midwest
I guess it takes someone from another country to make you appreciate the region you live in. Manolo, an amazing friend I made in Belgium, came to visit all the way from Motril, Spain for 3 weeks-ish. Which also meant Pilar, my roommate from Belgium took off work, as did JP — aka time for best buds reunion. Some of my best memories from abroad include these guys. Manolo arrived on Weds...

My relationship with my brother
-Hey Pete. How’s it going? -Just heading out. -Where ya going? -K-Dizzles. -K-Who? -My buddy Kevins. -Oh, Cool. -Go look up the Council of Trent. It happened in 1548. -(I laugh a little) What happened then? -(He starts telling me about Jesuits and armies and how weird that is and what not) -Oh look! A Chicken strip! Haha! (There was a rouge piece of chicken strip on my dresser) ...

– A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson I am loving on this book. Hard.  Another thing that tripped me out a little: This is false: “Electrons are not like orbiting planets at all, but more like blades of a spinning fan, managing to fill every bit of space in the orbit...

state of my current affairs
Today I got my first real world paycheck. And then I came home and got chastised because my room’s a mess. I’m in a very peculiar place in my life right now.

You are what you watch... maybe
I had to read an article from Ad Age for my Contemporary TV class. It looked at 7 shows and using psychographics determined the personality traits of viewers based on their prime time TV choices. I think it’s kinda BS, but what do I know.  My fave was probably this: “Like Michael on the show, watchers of “The Office” think they are superior to others.” Also, how...

It's spreading...
I have a problem: the averge amount of tabs I keep open is 12. Currently its more like 30. My inbox has approx. 200 emails it in, despite that fact that I have about 20 labels. Today it infiltrated even further: I currently have 13 Word docs open. I actually surprised myself. It freaks people out - but it’s an organized mess. I know exactly what I have open and where. And it’s...

“The Room” - it really is the best worst movie ever. The love triangle like you’ve never seen it before. Proof & Parody Saw it at Bordman’s a few days ago and had the best time throwing (plastic) spoons, watching people run around like best friends, and just scream hilarious interjections. I highly recommend seeing this movie at an actual theater with audience...

I can’t handle when my brother beats me at things that are in the category of “my forte.” One of these categories is puzzle games. When I stop answering my phone in the next few days it’s because I’m sitting in front of the PS3 trying to figure out the best strategy to win Blokus. *For fans of nerdy shape games, try Set. It’s also awesome.

things the tribune taught me today...
I have not been following current events lately. To an embarrassing degree actually & today I decided to turn that around. There’s a ton of those “Most Dangerous City in the US” and “Murder Capital of the US” lists floating around on the internet, and one of the reasons I look at them when I happen to come across them is because Chicago comes up a lot. But I was...

Rice vs Chufa
Today I had some Mexican food.. and horchata. It reminded me of Valencia and how Alberto took us to the town where horchata -or should I say orxata- originated. But this horchata was different - it was not rice based, nor did it have cinnamon in it unless it was trace amounts. Alberto was actually shocked at this news and the little Mexican twist to his beloved horchata. Their horchata is made...

Study Break
This is how I’ve been spending is thus far: Last Tuesday I went to Rome. I thought I wasn’t going to get a chance to go, but how could I leave Europe without seeing Rome? So I did. And it was fantastic. More bloggage on it later. 2.5 days later, with much much delay due to an unaccounted for passenger on my flight, I got back to Jhouse, dinner -with homemade cornbread- was waiting...

Teşekkür ederim. Nerede hastane nedir?
A major component of my trip to Turkey has been food. Everything is so amazing and way more affordable than Belgium. I find myself incapable of saying no to anything, which probably explains why when the 6 of us got on the apartment elevator at the beginning of the trip, everything was fine, but when we tried doing so yesterday it beeped until some of us got off. Today Liana, Shanti and I decided...

Current Location: Istanbul’s Chillout Cengo Hostel in a funky room with beds enought for 10 people, comfy couches, with a nice breeze entering through the open balcony letting in the sounds of the city as I sit at a table in the middle of the room… A few mins ago two men were playing and singing by a restaurant… The Buzz Lightyear sheets make it that much better. and ...

spring has sprung
I think yesterday marked the entrance of a new phase of my time in Belgium: the good weather phase. I’m trying to get a lot of reading done and finish an essay before Alex gets here tomorrow and I had the pleasure of doing it in the backyard… hanging out with 2 of my good friends: sun & light breeze. 3 of my housemates (jelte, alessandra & bob) were out there for a while, we...

amanda-babble: Fromage blanc is the French equivalent of Greek yoghurt. Mixed with diced kiwis and a bit of honey, it tastes like summer. This is Speculoos. It is ground up cookies, similar in texture to a Nutella spread. It also comes in “crunchy,” the crunch consisting of Speculoos cookies. It tastes best consumed in spoonfuls, although some enjoy it on waffles & bread. ...

the blogging needs to start
I’ve been so daunted by the fact that I haven’t blogged (or journaled) for so long that I keep putting it off. But not anymore. Maybe one day I’ll go back and retell what I’ve done this past month in Belgium, but until then i will start from current events. As a preface, it must say I absolutely love it here. I am terrified of having to go back home and really don’t...

visa strife
while in belgium, i expect to travel a lot. there’s a lot of places on my ‘to go to’ list, but one place i would never expect to end up was NYC. but sure enough, i will be there sometime within the next 90 days. why you may ask? the answer is simple and twofold: the fbi sucks and i should have payed more attention. the belgian visa requires A LOT of paperwork. one of these...
