Teşekkür ederim. Nerede hastane nedir?

A major component of my trip to Turkey has been food. Everything is so amazing and way more affordable than Belgium. I find myself incapable of saying no to anything, which probably explains why when the 6 of us got on the apartment elevator at the beginning of the trip, everything was fine, but when we tried doing so yesterday it beeped until some of us got off.

Today Liana, Shanti and I decided to go out for some pastries.

Before:

After:

That cream you see on those pastries, well turns out it’s not cream; it’s butter. Its main purpose seemed to be to lessen the extreme sugarness of the baklava like treats. We devoured that plate in a matter of minutes. I can’t remember the last time I experienced such a sugar rush, followed by a rather intense crash.

Seeing as I am dedicating a whole post to food, I might as well include some more of my food-periences.

Lale Restaurant aka “Pudding Shop”

Famous in the 60s & 70s as a gathering place for hippies heading to Asia, we thought we would check this place out. I got a chicken and veggie thing with some mushrooms on the side, tried some of Shanti’s beans and we of course had some custard rice pudding which was soooo damn good.

Anadolu Kavağı - Asian fishing village we stopped at on the “Nostalgic “Bosphorus cruise.

Turkish ice cream is a lot thicker in texture. It sort of pulls back as you try to spoon it out. And the muscles above were sooo good - even though I don’t like seafood.

This is eggplant in some sort of very oily sauce.

I want this in my home.

The Spice Market

Pomogranate

Freshly squeezed

Traditional Turkish Restaurant

I forgot the name of this place, but I’ll have to look into it. One of the girls who I am staying with roomed with a Turkish exchange student while at Penn so she introduced us to some of her friends who took us to this great restaurant. There we had a ton of traditional appetizers (one of which was brain, that we didn’t have and I sort of wish we tried) as well as lamb and fish. We sipped on Yeni Rakı, which turns a little white when you mix it with water. It tasted like licorice/absinthe. There were live Turkish music performers all around.

Misc

Kebap

Turkish pizza

Terrible Turkish burger

There are also street vendors selling bread rings that I’ve had wayy too many of, as well as roasted chestnuts, which I have yet to try.

And of course, Turkish Coffee

I’m sure so many people judged me as I took all the food pics. I may have a problem.

Also, I need to start exercising. My heart hurt today.
